Terrance Houle
Terrance Houle has suddenly emerged over the past few years as an important new voice for Aboriginal contemporary art. He challenges the established hierarchy of the art world, in part by referring to his upbringing as his art history.
In their own words (transcript)

I don’t want to have to feel like I’m in competition with anybody, I want to feel like I can just freshly look at my work every time and always think about the things that I’m doing. And kind of just gauge that if an idea comes to me, I’ll do it. And that’s where that fearless comes from. Is that like I don’t feel like I have to do that. I feel like I’ll just make it, and whatever happens to it happens. If it’s negative, positive, whatever I’ll take the heat. Because, I just need to make it right?
So for me success is about making work, and not so much about presenting it. But just making it and enjoying it.
