Tracey Deer

Tracey Deer is a trailblazing film maker with an impressive list of credits and a growing canon of work. Her documentary films investigate what many people think or talk about but few have been able to tackle as effectively as Tracey.

In their own words (transcript)

I hope my films make a difference. If it’s in one persons life, that’s what I want to do. I want to make a difference so, creativity then sort of becomes the tool to accomplish that, it’s not the opposite way around, it’s not I need to be creative let me find a story to tell. It’s very much I need to tell this story so I go in my toolbox and kind of get creative and say “Okay, how can I tell that and affect people?” I am very very passionate about our stories, our history, our future, our life as Native Peoples. I think every new piece of work I get the same butterflies in my stomach every single time when it’s finally going to be shown to an audience. But I really really love that; whether people hate it, whether people love it. I love the idea that somebody is reacting to something I’ve made. They’ve come to see it, they’re sitting there and they’re watching it. And even if they’re going to say, “Wow, you did a terrible job.” The fact is that they are reacting to something I made, and that for me is the biggest high of this entire process. It’s what I love and I love an audience.
