There are a number of prominent Aboriginal writers who come from the Maritimes. Dr. Marie Battiste is Mi’kmaq and broke new ground in advancing Aboriginal methodologies and oral teachings as valid in mainstream academia. To her credit Dr. Battiste has earned numerous awards throughout Canada and United States. In 2008 she was honoured with the National Aboriginal Achievement Award in Education. Apart from the few books she has written, collaborated and co-edited, Dr. Battiste has dozens of writing credits and continues research to advance Aboriginal ideologies.
